About this kit

Capture sharp images of the Milky Way and deep-sky objects from a dark location, and stay powered, warm, and organized through a night of shooting.

A new-moon Saturday and a two-hour drive to a dark site. You set up in the dark, polar-align a star tracker, and shoot long exposures until the small hours — fighting dew, cold, and a dying phone while trying not to wreck your night vision or bump the tripod.

  • A solo shooter (or pair) working a full night from a car-accessible dark site, with the car as base camp.

⚠️ Safety notes

  • Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back — remote dark sites are, by design, far from help. Watch for cold exposure on long, still nights.
  • Respect the dark site and other observers: keep white light off and shielded, and follow the site’s access rules.
  • Mind your footing in the dark around tripod legs and cables, and secure the tripod against wind.
