Purpose

Keep water out of the cockpit so waves, wakes, and weather stay outside the boat.

  • Nylon half-skirt— Cooler and easier on/off for calm-water paddling; less wave-proof.
  • None (sit-on-top kayak)— Sit-on-tops self-drain and don’t take a skirt.

Maintenance notes

  • Rinse after salt water; dry fully before storage.
  • Check the rand/bungee and grab loop each season.

Buying considerations

  • Fit is by cockpit size code AND your waist — check the boat maker’s chart.
  • Neoprene for rough water; coated nylon breathes better for touring.

⚠️ Safety notes

  • Practice a wet exit with the skirt on before paddling water you can’t swim out of — the grab loop must be second nature.
