  • Vintage all-metal machine— Used 1960s–70s machines punch webbing that stalls plastic-bodied modern ones — the MYOG community favorite.
  • Hand sewing— Always works; measured in evenings instead of minutes.

Maintenance notes

  • Clean lint from the bobbin area and feed dogs after each project.
  • Oil per the manual; a service pass yearly under heavy use (see the Sewing Machine Service Kit).

Buying considerations

  • MYOG needs straight stitch, zigzag, and adjustable tension — not 200 decorative stitches.
  • Metal internals and a strong motor matter for webbing and multi-layer pack fabric.
  • Walking-foot machines shine on slippery laminates but are a later upgrade.
