Alternatives
- Silpoly— Sags less than silnylon when wet — the modern tarp choice.
- X-Pac / laminate— Stiffer, waterproof pack fabric; needs sharper needles and care.
- Cordura— The abrasion-resistant heavyweight for pack bottoms.
Maintenance notes
- Store rolled, dry, and out of sunlight — UV quietly weakens nylon.
Buying considerations
- Match fabric weight to the job: 1.1 oz for stuff sacks, 2.2+ oz for packs.
- Coated (PU/sil) fabrics are waterproof but can’t be dyed and seal differently.
- Buy an extra half yard; cutting mistakes are part of learning.
