Recovery shackles

Purpose

Make the rated connection between the vehicle’s recovery point and the strap or rope.

Alternatives

• Soft shackle— Synthetic, light, and safer if it fails; the modern default for strap-to-strap.
• Steel bow shackle (rated)— The classic; heavier, and a projectile if misused — pin loads only.

Maintenance notes

• Inspect soft shackles for fuzzing and cut fibers; retire on visible core damage.
• Keep steel shackle threads clean; finger-tight plus a quarter-turn back.

Buying considerations

• Only buy shackles stamped or documented with a working load limit — unrated hardware store shackles are not recovery gear.
• Two shackles cover strap joining and most recovery-point setups.
