Purpose
Give a capsized paddler a stable outrigger to climb back into the cockpit without help.
Used in kits
- Kayak Day Trip Safety Kit
Boating & Paddling
Alternatives
- Foam paddle float— Nothing to inflate with cold hands; bulkier on deck.
- Assisted (T) rescue— Faster with a partner — the float is for when you’re alone.
Maintenance notes
- Inflate and check for leaks each season; rinse salt and sand out of the valves.
Buying considerations
- Dual-chamber floats keep working if one side leaks.
- It must live on deck within reach — a float in the hatch rescues no one.
⚠️ Safety notes
- A paddle float is only useful if you’ve practiced the re-entry in calm water first; cold water shortens the time you have to get it right.
