  • Lighter (BIC)Easier — carry one too. Fails when wet, cold, or empty.
  • Stormproof matchesGreat backup; finite supply.

Maintenance notes

  • Scrape off the black oxide coating before first use.
  • Store dry; white crust means moisture is corroding the rod.

Buying considerations

  • 3/8" thick and 4"+ long is much easier to use than keychain-size rods.
  • A fixed handle and a proper striker matter more than rod brand.
